Sometimes, I review the outfit photos that my sister and I took, and I think, “no smiles?”. There is the occasional smile, of course, but sometimes (like this outfit post) all the photos that work are of a pretty straight-faced Jess. And I feel the need to tell you this one really big secret. Rule number one of fashion blogging, if you will. It’s this:

Never, ever take yourself too seriously.

Maybe never, ever take yourself even a little seriously.

Fashion blogging, like many things,  is just one tiny little sliver in a great big world of hobbies and interests, and you have to remember that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. While it may look like I take myself pretty seriously in these photos, please know that it’s really just me and my sister taking photos on her day off.. cracking jokes about how weird I looked in that picture, or her stepping in a pile of ants, or swapping stories about our days. We’re just trying to take some pretty pictures of an outfit that I hope inspires someone. I thoroughly  enjoy fashion blogging, but at the end of the day, I realize how completely ridiculous it all is. That’s kind of what makes it all so fun!

As promised, here again is my favorite skirt. I prefer it with a more structured top, like this one. I love pairing tomato red with a pale pink color. One of my favorite color schemes is mixing red and pink. In the fall, it’s burgundy paired with blush… in spring, it’s tomato and baby pink. The most fun comes when you obviously surprise someone who “didn’t know you could do that”. My dears, you can do anything. Especially, when it comes to fashion. Don’t let those clothes of yours intimidate you. You have so much freedom in your own wardrobe – what you wear should be something that pleases you. You’re the one who has to live in it. If someone questions your outfit, always remember that you’re the expert on what you like.

If you’re sensing a theme here on my favorite Spring essential, you’re probably right. It’s lace. I’ve always been drawn to everything lace. If Ross goes shopping with me, and I pick up a lace top or dress, he’ll say something like, “Why am I not surprised?’, or, “Yep, that looks just like you.” So, maybe I’m predictable in that way… but I like to stick to what I know works. I know that lace is always pretty. It gives off a feminine and elegant vibe, and always looks classy and put together. You can’t throw on a lace frock like this one without feeling instantly more lovely. I mean, for me, we’re talking about changing out of gym rat garb, so pretty much anything can make me feel more lovely, but the lace numbers are special.

Skirt: American Eagle (old), Also love this one // Top: similar // Blazer: similar // Necklace: Charming Charlie // Pumps: Zappos (on sale!)

I woke up this morning to the fresh air, the sun shining, flowers blooming. Little birds helped me get dressed. Everything was perfect and it was a beautiful day… and then… I had to go to the dentist.   Womp, womp.

That was dramatic of me. I didn’t even really have to go to the dentist. I chose to get a little problem fixed, before it became a bigger problem. Because I’m a preventative type of girl, like that.

Aside from my non-dramatic dentist visit, my week looks pretty nice. And, I’m going on my first little beach trip of the season in a few weeks, so I’m getting excited about that already! I think I may be the biggest over-planner/over-packer in the world. Of course, when I say over-planning, I don’t mean that I have planned events and scheduled times to be everywhere. No, I mean I’ve planned every outfit out, down to the earrings, and I’ve packed every makeup and beauty product that I own for a two-day trip. I don’t know where we’re going or what we’re doing when we get there… All I know is that I plan to look cute doing it.

Even though it was freezing last night, I’m excited about the Spring weather on the horizon. This weekend and next week look very promising, and I’m looking forward to skirts, short sleeves, and sandals. I’m ready with all the pastels, and lace, and spring fabrics you could want. Today was seriously so beautiful. Spring has been slowly inching out fall for my favorite season, as I get older. I think there’s something so wonderful about watching everything come alive again. All the trees and flowers start to bloom, all the birds are chirping, and everyone wants to get outside and enjoy the warmth.
